Phenome Health’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lee Hood will be giving public lectures at Cambridge and Oxford. Dr. Hood will discuss the vision of the P4 era of healthcare that is predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory.
The lecture at Cambridge is on May 24, 2022 and you can watch for free via the Cambridge Network.
The lecture at Oxford on May 25, 2022 will be broadcast to the public and you can register for free.
Let’s think about each of the Ps:
Predictive means that your physician, or eventually your own AI assistant, will be able to predict your health trajectory given genetics, current health and behaviors. This happens to a small degree today; for example, if you smoke you dramatically increase your odds of lung cancer, high blood pressure and a host of other conditions. But in the future we’ll be able to put all of your current and past behaviors and environmental exposures in the context of your genetics and predict with some degree of accuracy what you can expect. This is the first ‘P’ of P4 health.
Preventive means that the predictions are not set in stone. The decisions you make about what to eat, how you prioritize sleep or exercise, the environment where you live, all have an impact on the prediction models. So you can modify your health trajectory with very specific actions that go way beyond the standard advice of “eat better and exercise more” to data-driven guidance where you can identify the biggest bang for the buck in making decisions about your health and wellness.
Personalized is understanding that one size does not fit all. We are all different. We have different genetics, different preferences, different cultural environments, and different priorities… all of which are part of the bigger picture in terms of our health. In the case of prevention, maybe you are at high risk for condition X but very low risk for condition Y – knowledge of this will be a part of your decision making. For disease treatment, there are typically many biological roads that lead to the same clinical outcome. Understanding exactly what road you’re on will help inform the best path forward.
Participatory is being part of the solution. You’re the boss. The physician and the AI assistants of the future are not going to tell you what to do: they are going to lay out all the options and help you understand the benefits or consequences of each option. Personalization will help you optimize your own health to the degree possible given the cards you were dealt and the things under your control, but it’s all up to you in the end.
Dr. Hood will discuss the science of wellness and prevention. He will lay out exactly where we are, where we’re going and how we’re going to get there in an exciting new project we call “Beyond the Human Genome”.
